Art Therapy…
Facilitates Communication
Art can help express what words, at times, cannot. The art process can be seen as a form of communication between therapist and client.
Develops Emotional Intelligence
The art process often aids the processing of emotional experiences, revealing and shedding light on valuable information, and deepening the artist’s self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
Fosters Emotional Wellness
The expression of ideas and feelings, and channeling of uncomfortable emotions like grief, anxiety, or anger into the art often results in immediate relief. When practiced regularly, art-making can be a profound coping mechanism.
Art-making also aids in the development of patience, presence, and acceptance— the core tenets of mindfulness practice. Mindfulness has likewise been linked to enhanced well-being and decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Art therapists are trained professionals with a minimum of a master’s level degree. Many art therapists have additional training in various talk therapy approaches. We use fine art materials and intentional art processes to evoke a variety of outcomes during a therapy session.
When you create art with an art therapist, the focus is often on the process of creation rather than the resulting product or artwork. As such, you don’t need to have any experience with art whatsoever to benefit from art therapy!
“Art can permeate the very deepest parts of us, where no words exist.”
— Eileen Miller
“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.”
— Henry Ward Beecher
“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.”
— Stella Adler
